Department of Child, Adolescent and Maternal Health was founded 20 years ago. Our department was among the first groups to develop child neglect evaluation instrument and criteria and to start epidemiologic research and was in the leading position in this field. We have recently begun a study of genetic-environmental factors’ influence on pregnancy outcome based on birth cohort. It is our objective to investigate the impact of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals, nutritional factors and psychological stress on maternal and child health or adolescent growth.
There are 5 staff members in this department, with 2 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 1 postdoctoral fellow and 1 teaching assistant. Our department has undertaken courses such as “Child, Adolescent and Maternal Health”, “Promotion of Health” for undergraduates, “Preventive Medicine” for graduate program and “Child, Adolescent and Maternal Health” for foreign students. Our department also participated in the writing and editing of “Child and Adolescent Hygiene”. Our group has about 40 government funded projects, including 7 National Natural Science Foundation funded projects and 20 provincial funded projects. We have published nearly 200 articles including 40 research articles in science citation index journals. Our principle investigator is honored with the title “Young Science Star of Shaanxi Province”, and received funding support by “Young Extraordinary Talents Support Project of Universities in Shaanxi” and “National Reserve Candidates Support Project of Xi’an Jiaotong University”.
Over 50 students have been or are currently in our graduate student program. Our laureates mainly find employment in Center for Disease Control, hygiene surveillance institutes, hospitals, psychiatric disease prevention or psychology counsel institutes, maternal and child health hospitals or departments and bureaucratic positions in education. We have established professional collaboration with First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, First Hospital of Xi’an, Forth Hospital of Xi’an, Ninth Hospital of Xi’an and Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Xi’an.
Our staff members hold important positions in national and regional academic organizations, and also participate in making national policies and guidelines on anti-epidemic, food hygiene and rickets prevention and care. Our department is a member of Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Preventive Medicine Committee and Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Child Health Committee.
Our teaching staffs have wrote and edited nearly 10 textbooks on education of physical health or general health, child health care, etc. They are also editorial board members of prestigious journal as “Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine”, “Chinese Journal of Pediatrics”, “Chinese Journal of Public Health”, “Chinese Journal of Child Health Care”, “Journal of Clinical Pediatrics”, “Chinese Journal of Women and Children Health” and “Chinese Journal of Woman and Child Health Research”.
