The Institution of Endemic Diseases, which was attached to School of Public Health, Xi’an Jiaotong University Health Science Center, was primarily established in 1996. It was formed in the original Xi'an Medical College by the merger of the Keshan Disease Research Office（founded in 1963）and the Institute of Kashin-Beck Disease（founded in 1970）. It has the key disciplines of Xi’an Jiaotong university, which has excellent researchers and formidable scientific research strength. And a lot of breakthroughs have been made in the study of Keshan Disease(KD) and Kashin-Beck Disease(KBD) by the institution. In the past decades, it has undertaken more than 100 national, ministerial, provincial or international research projects including more than 30 national natural science funds and played a critical role in the national investigation of KD in Chuxiong and KBD in Yongshou. And it has also undertaken the national disease surveillance research of KD and KBD in Shaanxi Province. Until now, it has published more than 1000 papers as well as 30 books and obtained more than 40 research awards including 2 international awards and 4 national/ministerial/provinciall awards. It has formulated 4 national medical standards for Keshan disease, Kashin-Beck disease and endemic fluorosis. The main study fields of the institution include 1) The cause, control and therapy of KD; 2) The cause, control and therapy of KBD; 3) The pathological mechanism, control and therapy of endemic fluorosis and arseniasis.
The Institute has a group of well-known experts who are influential in the field of endemic diseases in China. Lots of them held important positions in the academic organization of endemic diseases in China, for example, Prof. Shichen Wang, Prof. Peipu Yin, Prof. Dongxu Mo, Prof. Guanglu Xu, Prof. Zhilun Wang, Prof. Xiong Guo, Prof. Yongmin Xiong, Prof. Jinghong Chen in the Endemic Disease Science Committee of the Ministry of Health, the Endemic Disease Experts Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health, the Environmental and Health Expert Committee of the Ministry of Health, the National Endemic Disease Association, the National Health Standards Committee, the Endemic Disease Society of the Chinese Medical Association, the Trace Element Society of the Chinese Medical Association.
Chinese Society of Geriatric Osteoporosis Committee, Medical Geography Committee of China Geography Society. Endemic Disease Society and Trace Elements Society of Shaanxi Provincial Medical Association were founded by and affiliated to our institution. Prof. Peiyu Yin, Prof. Shichen Wang, Prof. Guanglu Xu, Prof. Zhilun Wang and Prof. Yongmin Xiong have served as the chairman of the two societies. Recently, there are 26 staff members in the institution, including 6 professors, 6 associate professors, 6 intermediate personnel, 10 junior teachers/experimental technicians. More than 100 master students and 40 doctoral students have studied in this institution. Through the joint efforts of the staff in the institute, great achievements have been made in the field of prevention and control of endemic diseases, especially in Kashin-Beck disease and Keshan disease.
