In order to promote the health status of the population in the Western China and even the Silk Road region, theCollaborative Innovation Center of Endemic Diseases and Health Promotion for Silk Road Region of Shaan’xi Provincewas founded on May 21 of 2015 at Xi’an Jiaotong University and officially recognized as the “Shaanxi Province 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” on January 24 of 2018. The center was established led by Xi'an Jiaotong University with the collaboration with Air Force Military Medical University, Northwest University, Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Endemic Diseases Control, Shaanxi Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Qinghai Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The endemic diseases affects not only China but also other countries in the Silk Road region. It is one of the main causes that results in the low population health level and slow economic growth in endemic areas. Therefore, the center mainly focuses on the major demand in the field of endemic diseases and population health promotion in the Silk Road region. It mainly conductes the researches on the issues such as damage mechanisms of environment risk factors, subclinical diagnosis of endemic diseases, environmental etiology elimination technology, intervention strategies of environment risk factors. The aim of the center is to make breakthrough on the key scientific issues of the endemic diseases and to solve the problems constraining the control and prevention of endemic diseases in the endemic areas.

There are four basic research platforms in the center:

(1) Endemic osteochondral disease research platform: It mainly conducts researches on major scientific issues such as environmental etiology, diagnosis of clinical or subclinical diseases and molecular biomarkers of diseases.

(2) Endemic cardiomyopathy research platform: It mainly conducts researches on major scientific issues such as the epidemiology and pathogenesis of diseases, disease prevention and control strategies as well as molecular diagnostic markers.

(3) Edemic natural-focal disease research platform: It mainly conducts researches on major scientific issues such as the pathogenic characteristics, genetic evolution and molecular epidemiology of brucellosis.

(4) Trace Elements and Endemic Diseases Research Platform: It mainly conducts the large-scale epidemiological investigation of thyroid disease in the areas with high selenium level, low selenium level or regular selenium level.

There are 34 staff members in the center including 10 doctoral supervisors, 15 master's tutors and 20 of them have doctor degrees. It has been supported bythe key laboratory of trace elements and endemic diseases of National Health and Family Planning Commission, the clinical key specialty programme of endemic diseases of National Health and Family Planning Commission, the key laboratory of environment and genes related to diseases of National Ministry of Education, and other laboratories at Air Force Military Medical University, Northwest University, Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Endemic Diseases Control, Shaanxi Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Qinghai Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The total area of the laboratory is about 10,000 square meters, and there are more than 300 sets of experiment instruments. In the past few yeas, a collaborative research model has been formed, and some important achievements have been made in areas such as environmentally exposed molecular markers and early molecular diagnosis of endemic diseases.
